Van Etten is proud to present Slør by Beatrice Alexanian.
 

Alexanian’s practice is concerned with movement, migration and how to exist between places, carrying experiences both outwardly and inwardly. Her work reflects on objects and materials that carry traces and non-verbal narratives, giving form to experiences that cannot always be described in words.

In Slør, in English: Veil, Alexanian takes as a starting point the violence of a room that once was. The works are based on a video she filmed in a living room in Beirut in 2018. A still image from the video are printed on aluminium, fragmented and displaced across frames and panels. Memory and absence are central. The image moves between visibility and concealment, while the room in Beirut remains present as traces on the surface.

Beatrice Alexanian (f. 1991, DK/AM/LB), graduated from the Oslo National Academy of the Arts (2013-2018) and the Athens School of Fine Arts (2017). Her practice primarily takes the form of sculpture and installation, working across various materials, objects, surfaces and visual displacements. Her work explores how objects and materials can carry traces of both individual and collective experiences. Central to her practice are themes of language, identity, belonging, memory, trauma, and forms of communication that exists beyond language. Through subtle material abstractions and displacements, she creates wordless narratives in which the works occupy a space between representing something and being something in their own right.

Alexanian has exhibited at, among others, Galleri Tom Christoffersen, Sharp Projects and Kunsthal Charlottenborg in Denmark, Kunstnernes Hus, Podium and Kunsthall Oslo. Her work has been presented in international contexts including at Heerz Tooya in Bulgaria, the Goethe-Institut in Ramallah, Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin and the Italian Embassy in Athens. She has been a guestteacher at Home at Art and served as acting coordinator and teacher in Sculptor at the Art School in Taastrup. She has also realised a number of commissioned public artworks for municipalities and institutions across Denmark. Alexanian is behind the initiative 14-8x21.dk.
